The South Dakota School of Mines & Technology (South Dakota Mines) Physics Department invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor position in experimental nuclear or particle physics. The department has developed strong research programs in neutrino physics, direct detection of dark matter, and nuclear astrophysics with its recently established Ph.D. program and proximity to the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, South Dakota. SURF is the host of several world-class underground experiments including DUNE, LZ, Majorana Demonstrator, and CASPAR. A DUNE logistics center is planned two blocks from the South Dakota Mines campus in Rapid City. While we will consider strong candidates in any SURF-related field, we are particularly interested in candidates who will lead work that will strengthen and complement our group’s research on DUNE.

We primarily seek candidates at the Assistant Professor level; however exceptional candidates with proven track records of success in obtaining external funding may be considered for an Associate Professor position. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in nuclear/particle physics or a related field. Demonstrated leadership as a postdoctoral researcher is highly desirable.

The successful candidate is expected to build strong externally funded research programs, supervise graduate students, and teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The candidate will also participate in the full range of faculty responsibilities, including academic advising, service on committees, sustained scholarly research, and outreach activities. The anticipated start date of the position is August 20, 2018.
