The Department of Mathematics and Statistics invites application for a full-time, hourly, Research Assistant in Bioinformatics with principal duties to include research, statistical analyses, and data curation. The ideal candidate will have prior experience in statistical analyses, biological data curation, and research experience in bioinformatics. This individual will work with Dr. Xijin Ge on creating bioinformatics tools and resources in support of BioSNTR, a virtual research center funded by National Science Foundation and the State of South Dakota.

Responsibilities: Responsibilities will include biological data curation, statistical analysis of biological data, and writing R programs to solve biological computing problems.

Qualifications: Required qualifications: Master’s degree in Statistics; experience in biological data curation; broad understanding of biology & biochemistry from trainings in agricultural, biological, food sciences, or related fields; excellent written and verbal communication skills; and excellent collaborative and interpersonal skills.

Desired qualifications: Enthusiasm and aptitude to bioinformatics research and collaborative research.

Department Description and Cultural Expectations

The Department of Mathematics & Statistics currently has 22 tenure-track faculty, 13 full time Instructors, 80 graduate students, and 145 undergraduate majors. The department currently offers a B.S. and M.S. in Mathematics, an M.S. in Statistics, an M.S. in Data Science, and a Ph.D. in Computational Science and Statistics.

South Dakota State University is a land-grant institution and is the state’s largest institution of higher education with an enrollment of approximately 12,500 students. SDSU is located in Brookings, South Dakota, a community of 22,000 near the east central border of South Dakota on Interstate 29.
