The Upward Bound (UB) Program at USD is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. The program is designed to generate the academic skills and motivation necessary for success in postsecondary education. Participants are talented high school students who come from disadvantaged backgrounds where neither parent has earned a bachelor’s degree. These students may be at a disadvantage by reason of socio-economic circumstance or inadequate school preparation.
For six weeks, UB provides an intensive summer residential program on the USD campus. Approximately 50-60 participants will receive: 1) instruction in composition, literature, world languages, math, ACT Prep and laboratory sciences; 2) advising in the areas of educational and career opportunities; 3) exposure to enrichment activities designed to promote personal and social growth.

Mandatory Summer Staff Training/Debrief: May 23-25 & July 8-9

General Requirements
All applicants should clearly demonstrate: experience with, and commitment to, underrepresented, ethnically diverse and low income/first generation youth, as well as expertise relevant to the particular position for which they are applying. Applicants must be able to work closely with the entire staff and be available for program events including mandatory staff training, daily staff meetings, facilitation of afternoon, evening and weekend activities and study sessions. All personnel will share responsibility for transporting students in USD vehicles and must have a valid driver’s license. This is a full-time position and other employment or taking summer classes is not recommended.

Specific requirements for each position listed below. All applications must address the general requirements listed above and the specific requirements.

Applicants should be enrolled college/grad students. Must have solid academic record, excellent people skills and experience mentoring youth preferred. Experience with the UB program and demographic preferred.

RESIDENTIAL MENTOR POSITIONS – Must live in Residence Hall May 23 –July 9 (including weekends)
Summer Activities Director (1): Coordinate with Director to oversee the day-to-day operation of the Summer Component; provide leadership, supervise and serve as a role model to Residential staff and UB students; responsible for planning and implementing appropriate Orientation activities, daily social/recreational activities for students, weekend trips and final trip and meals; must exhibit a high level of fiduciary responsibility in student financial/stipend management. Requirements: Bachelor’s degree; experience supervising youth and small groups required. Familiar with college culture including logistical, social, academic and emotional aspects.

Residential Supervisor (1): Coordinate with UB staff to provide training, leadership, supervision and support for Residential mentors and UB students; create schedules and be the main contact for the program regarding all aspects connected to the residential component; implement campus hall policies and procedures; provide first aid and coordinate doctor visits. Requirements: Bachelor’s degree; experience supervising youth and small groups required. Ability to communicate schedules and policies clearly and work well within the UB staff team. Must be familiar with college culture including logistical, social, academic and emotional aspects.

Counselor (2): Promote educational aspiration and performance; provide students and staff with personal counseling and family group guidance sessions; assist Summer Activities Director with implementing activities (field trips, evening rec, transportation). Requirements: Experience with HS students and specific UB demographic; experience with UB preferred. Prefer HS Counselor Certification.

Summer Residential Mentors (8): Promote educational aspiration and performance by acting as a role model. Supervise students’ free time; lead small groups, plan and facilitate educational, cultural and recreational events; handle routine discipline issues; provide tutoring and advising to individuals and groups of students; promote a community of mutual respect and trust. Requirements: Enrolled or graduated college/graduate students. Solid academic record, excellent people skills and experience supervising youth required. Experience with the UB program and demographic preferred. Experience leading small groups and/or tutoring is desirable. Weekend work/attending training are required. Room and board included.

Summer Bridge Mentors (2): Promote educational aspiration and performance of recently graduated UB seniors taking their first college courses; provide with continuous academic support, self-advocacy skills and transitional logistics. Act as liaison with USD Faculty providing instruction. Coordinate with UB program staff to ensure Bridge student success. Requirements: Enrolled or graduated college/graduate students. Solid academic record, excellent people skills and experience mentoring youth required. Experience with the UB program and demographic preferred. Weekend work/attending training required. Room and board included.
