The Upward Bound (UB) Program at USD is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. The program is designed to generate the academic skills and motivation necessary for success in postsecondary education. Participants are talented high school students who come from disadvantaged backgrounds where neither parent has earned a bachelor’s degree. These students may be at a disadvantage by reason of socio-economic circumstance or inadequate school preparation.

For six weeks, UB provides an intensive summer residential program on the USD campus. Approximately 50-60 participants will receive: 1) instruction in composition, literature, world languages, math, ACT Prep and laboratory sciences; 2) advising in the areas of educational and career opportunities; 3) exposure to enrichment activities designed to promote personal and social growth.

Summer Program: May 26-July 7, 2018
Mandatory Summer Staff Training/Debrief: May 23-25 & July 8-9

General Requirements
All applicants should clearly demonstrate: experience with, and commitment to, underrepresented, ethnically diverse and low income/first generation youth, as well as expertise relevant to the particular position for which they are applying. Applicants must be able to work closely with the entire staff and be available for program events including mandatory staff training.
Applicants must be enrolled or graduated college/grad students. Must have solid academic record, excellent people skills and experience mentoring youth preferred. Experience with the UB program and demographic preferred.
All Tutor/Mentors will provide individualized instruction to Upward Bound students during the summer program in coordination with Instructors, promote education aspiration and performance.
Hours will be flexible, up to 30 hours/week, primarily during the afternoon, evening and weekend.

TUTOR/MENTOR POSITIONS
• Math Tutor/Mentors: Thorough knowledge of subject, especially algebra, geometry, and/or trigonometry and pre-calculus.

• English/Language Arts Tutor/Mentors: Thorough knowledge of subject, especially composition, reading and grammar.

• Science Tutor/Mentors: Thorough knowledge of biology, chemistry, physics, anat/phys, physical/earth, astronomy or other sciences.

• School Success Skills/Postsecondary Prep Tutor/Mentors: Thorough knowledge/experience with time management skills, study skills and research/library techniques and skills.
