The School of Communication and Journalism at South Dakota State University seeks a dynamic, self-guided individual to serve as a Professional Academic Advisor to undergraduate students. The advisor will work with students in Advertising, Agricultural Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, and Communication Studies. The advisor will reside within the school and report to the Director of the School of Communication and Journalism.

The advisor will assist the school and the college in recruiting and advising students, career preparation, and other projects and tasks that enhance the undergraduate experience. These tasks may include internships, student organizations, competitions, scholarships, workshops and seminars with industry leaders. The advisor may also teach an undergraduate course for students in the school in future academic years.

Candidates must have a Master’s degree in a discipline represented by the School of Communication and Journalism or in Education, Counseling, or a related field, plus one to three years of experience related to student advising, student affairs, and/or classroom instruction. The successful candidate must also be able to teach introductory courses and demonstrate effective written communication skills, as well as verbal communication, and interpersonal skills. Must have a valid driver’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.

Candidates would preferably have three to five years of experience in student advising and working with student electronic files and advising databases. Experience teaching undergraduate courses offered within the school.

Department Description and Cultural Expectations

The school offers undergraduate majors in Advertising, Agricultural Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, and Communication Studies. Collectively, these programs enroll approximately 250 students. The College of Arts and Science is the largest college at SDSU with approximately 2,200 students and 150 faculty in numerous schools and departments. The University is located in Brookings, South Dakota, a community of approximately 22,100 near the east central border of South Dakota on Interstate 29.
