The Department of Animal Science at South Dakota State University invites applications to fill a nine-month, tenure track Assistant Professor position (70% Research, 30% Teaching).

The successful candidate will be expected to lead a nationally-recognized research program in Ruminant Nutrition and Feedlot Management that is relevant to the beef cattle industry in South Dakota. Successful grantsmanship, recruitment, and mentoring of outstanding graduate students are essential to this position. The successful candidate will also be responsible for teaching an undergraduate Feedlot Operations and Management course as well as two graduate courses, one per year.

Ph.D. in Animal Science (or closely related field), with an emphasis in Ruminant Nutrition, successfully completed by appointment date. An in-depth understanding of feedlot operations and management as well as the beef industry is also required. The successful candidate must have demonstrated research abilities and evidence of scholarly output. Furthermore, the successful candidate must be able to teach, interact and communicate (verbally and written) effectively with colleagues, staff, students, and stakeholders. A demonstrated commitment to excellence in classroom instruction, the ability to develop innovative, effective methods of teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, and grant writing experience are preferred.

Department Description and Cultural Expectations

SDSU is a land grant institution and the state’s largest institution of higher education with an enrollment of approximately 12,500 students. The Department of Animal Science includes 20 faculty instructing 425 undergraduate majors. Departmental curricula include programs in Animal Science, Equine Science and Meat Science. Graduate degrees offered are Master of Science in Animal Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Animal Science.

Brookings, SD is a community of approximately 22,000 located near the east central border of South Dakota along Interstate 29. The city has an excellent K-12 education system, is accessible to major medical facilities, has an active cultural and social environment, and has numerous lakes and parks within driving distance. Brookings is located 50 miles north of Sioux Falls, a city of 160,000.
