South Dakota State University is currently searching for a Director of Admissions. We are looking for a dynamic, visionary and collaborative leader with strong entrepreneurial, strategic and analytic skills and the ability to lead a student-centered, campus-wide market development and recruitment effort. This is a 12 month, full-time, benefit eligible position. The Director reports to the Vice President for Student Affairs. This position collaborates with a variety of internal and external constituencies to create and implement differentiated and highly personalized recruitment and marketing plans taking full advantage of available technologies and resourceful personnel to maximize enrollment. The Director is responsible for setting the strategic direction and leadership in a data-driven, results-oriented admissions program that is consistent with the goals and mission of SDSU.

• Create and implement creative, innovative, differentiated and highly personalized undergraduate marketing and recruitment plans annually targeting multiple audiences including high school, out of state, dual credit, honors, homeschool, military, underrepresented, and transfer students taking full advantage of available technologies and resourceful personnel to maximize enrollment with a focus on access;
• Implement robust strategies to build a broad prospective student pool to build the recruitment funnel and meet University enrollment goals;
• Develop scholarship- leveraging strategies for new students to increase student yield in collaboration with Financial Aid and Scholarships, the SDSU Foundation, the University budget office, and academic colleges;
• Work with University Marketing and Communications, Continuing and Distance Education, International Affairs, Graduate Studies, and academic colleges to coordinate recruitment and marketing initiatives and promote consistent messaging and enrollment opportunities;
• Provide direction to, promote innovation in, and assess effectiveness of communication development and messaging, digital strategy, publication development, and the relationship development processes for prospective students with a focus on best practices and a multi-channel approach to communication;
• Manage new student enrollment goals effectively to achieve results with efforts to include development of individual recruitment staff goals by territory, data-driven decisions, assessment of strategies, and a focus on continuous improvement;
• Conduct regular market analysis with an emphasis on identification of emerging markets, trends, and best practices to increase new student enrollment at SDSU;
• Oversee campus visit and recruitment program development focused on personalization and strong student service expectations, highlighting the unique opportunities available at SDSU;
• Develop and implement student-focused recruitment and admission policies and procedures with a focus on effectiveness and efficiency and issue admission decisions;
• Maintain thorough knowledge of the various technologies utilized in the recruitment process at the University and within the Board of Regents system (with many shared, multi-institution systems) and continually explore new tools to integrate in order to enhance recruitment efforts with specific emphasis on social media ;
• Develop collaborative partnerships with departments across the University within and outside of Student Affairs and with the Board of Regents system to enhance relationships, improve technology, and showcase Admissions as a strong partner;
• Enhance the office environment with a focus on people-centered leadership, an openness to new ideas, and high service expectations;
• Identify and implement opportunities for staff training and professional development;
• Collaborate with the Enrollment Management Council to set new student enrollment goals based on strategic direction of the University and market demand;
• Effectively communicate admissions data, recruitment efforts, and funnel reports to a variety of constituencies across the University with a focus on transparency of data to drive decision-making in a responsibility centered management structure at SDSU;
• Manage departmental budget to maximize impact of resources available while remaining within spending authority and adhering to federal, state, Board of Regents, and University policies, procedures and accounting guidelines;
• Participate actively in University committee work and campus events;
• Participate in state, regional and national professional associations in order to remain connected to best practices in recruitment and marketing;
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, Board of Regents, and University policies and procedures.

• Master’s degree required in relevant field completed by first day of employment;
• Minimum of seven (7) years of progressive responsibility in college admissions, market development and/or recruitment settings;
• Minimum of five (5) years of full-time employee supervisory experience;
• Proven results in recruitment of undergraduate students;
• Superior oral and written communication and interpersonal skills;
• Valid driver’s license, or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire, and willingness to travel.

• Experience integrating relevant technology and best practices into the recruitment process;
• Effective use of data when making decisions and assessing effectiveness of programs and/or services;
• Demonstrated success building collaborative working relationships with internal and external groups;
• Understanding of the recruitment market in South Dakota and the region;
• Ability to organize and prioritize projects and initiatives in order to maximize resources and create efficiencies;
• Strategic planning, communications planning, and/or marketing experience;
• Working knowledge of effective budget management, supervisory skills and program development and management;
• Strong commitment to staff development and customer service.

South Dakota State University is the state’s largest, most comprehensive higher education institution. As South Dakota’s Morrill Act land-grant university, SDSU had a fall 2016 enrollment of 12,613 students from all 50 states and 85 countries. Students choose from 73 majors, 36 specializations, 75 minors, 35 master’s degree programs, 15 Ph.D. programs and two professional doctorates. Approximately 55% of SDSU students are residents of South Dakota, 37% from other states, and 8% from other countries.
