South Dakota State University Housing and Residential Life is offering an exciting career opportunity as a Residence Hall Director. We are looking for a creative and motivated individual to join our team in Brookings, SD. This is a 10-month, full-time, live-in position. The Residence Hall Director develops and administers a comprehensive hall program meeting the goals of the Department of University Housing & Residential Life, Division of Student Affairs, and South Dakota State University. The Residence Hall Director provides leadership and direction to all students and staff living in the assigned residence hall. Additionally, they are responsible for student staff supervision, training and development; hall Government advising; assisting in the follow up of academic deficiencies and early alerts; managing in-hall student conduct, outreach and counseling of residents and problem-solving within the hall. Reporting directly to an Area Coordinator, the Residence Hall Director is an essential member of the leadership team of the Department of University Housing & Residential Life. The Residence Hall Director is also involved in departmental and university committees or special projects.

• Earned Bachelor’s degree by start date;
• At least one year of Residence Life or Student Affairs experience;
• Effective written and verbal communication skills;
• Valid driver’s license;
• Basic accounting skills;
• Effective interpersonal skills.

• Strong leadership skills;
• Experience in building community in a college or university residential setting;
• The ability to motivate staff members and problem-solve within a student-centered developmental model;
• Previous experience as a student staff member for a Housing & Residential Life program during undergraduate program or residence life;
• Graduate school degree in Student Personnel Administration, Guidance and Counseling, or related field;
• Crisis/Emergency Response experience;
• Budget/payroll experience;
• Programming experience;
• Student staff supervision experience;
• More than three years of related experience.

Department Description and Cultural Expectations

SDSU is a land grant university and the state’s largest institution of higher education with an enrollment of approximately 13,000 students. SDSU is located in Brookings, South Dakota, a community of approximately 22,100 persons on the Eastern border of the state. The city has an excellent K-12 educational system. During a campus visit, a tour of the education systems and visit with school administrators may be arranged. The city is also accessible to major medical facilities, has an active social and cultural environment, and has numerous lakes and parks within an easy commute. Sioux Falls, a city of approximately 150,000 persons, is a 40-minute drive to the south. Brookings is also located about 200 miles west of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, a metropolitan area with major design and art centers such as International Market Square, Minneapolis Institute of Art, Walker Art Center, and Weisman Art Museum.
