The Department of History, Political Science, Philosophy and Religion at South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD is seeking to create a pool of dynamic teachers for Part-Time Instructor/ Lecturer positions in Philosophy, History and Political Science. Applicants should have a PhD in the appropriate field, and should have experience teaching online, ideally on D2L. The ability to teach face-to-face courses as needed is also desirable.

POLS 100 – American Government

POLS 210 – State and Local Government

HIST 111 – World History: Early
HIST 112 – World History: Modern
HIST 121 – Western Civilization: Early
HIST 122 – Western Civilization: Modern
HIST 460 – American Military History

PHIL 100 – Introduction to Philosophy
PHIL 200 – Introduction to Logic
PHIL 220 – Introduction to Ethics

• Ph.D. in the appropriate field at time of application for Lecturer rank. Nearly completed PhD may be considered for an Instructor rank if there is relevant life experience, like law or public administration;
• Experience teaching online;
• Experience teaching one or more of the indicated courses;
• Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver exciting courses face-to-face and online;
• Strong interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills;

• Existing knowledge of D2L
• Ability to teach face to face courses

Department Description and Cultural Expectations

SDSU is a land grant institution and the state’s largest institution of higher education with an enrollment of approximately 13,000. The department is located in the College of Arts and Sciences and provides majors in history and political science along with minors in philosophy and religion. Various members of the department contribute courses to the global studies program, the American Indian program, and the teacher education program.

Brookings, South Dakota is a community of 22,000 on the Eastern border of the state. It is located 50 miles north of the city of Sioux Falls, a city of approximately 150,000. The drive to Sioux Falls takes approximately 40 minutes, as the north-south interstate runs alongside the town. Brookings has an eclectic mix of fine restaurants and shops and an excellent K-12 educational system. The city is also accessible to major medical facilities, has an active social and cultural environment, and has numerous lakes and parks within easy distance. The state arboretum is part of the SDSU campus. Brookings is also located about 200 miles west of the twin cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, a metropolitan area with major design and art centers.
