The South Dakota OSHA Consultation Program/Engineering Extension Office at South Dakota State University is seeking a qualified individual to fill the position of Safety Consultant. This is a twelve month, full-time, benefit-eligible, non-faculty exempt position. SDSU is especially interested in candidates that can contribute to the experiences of underrepresented minorities in organizations. RESPONSIBILITIES: • Serve as a resource to business and industry within South Dakota and evaluate the safety of the private sector workplaces. • Assist South Dakota employers in reducing costs from occupational injuries and/or illness which benefits companies relative to potential economic development opportunities as part of Engineering Extension’s outreach service efforts to industry, the mission of the College of Engineering, and South Dakota State University. • Assess industrial and construction workplaces for safety hazards. • Provide professional evaluation of identified hazards; explain hazards and their implications. Assist in the correction of hazards so that accurate and beneficial safety surveys are conducted. • Serve as an off-site technical resource to businesses, faculty, and students in order to provide information on workplace safety. • Develop education curriculum, present at educational seminars, and provide professional and academic information on safety. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Management, Health, Safety, Construction Management, Technology, or related field completed by start date. • Valid Driver’s License. • Driving and some overnight travel are required. • Must be proficient with the use of a computer equipped with Microsoft Office software. • Demonstrate effective communication, interpersonal relations, and motivational skills with staff, faculty, students, construction project managers, industrial plant managers, company officers, production/maintenance workers and construction personnel. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: • A minimum of one year of familiarity and experience with OSHA General Industry and/or Construction Standards, OSHA Consultation Programs/Policies/Procedures. • Experience in identifying and evaluating safety hazards in the workplace. • Experience in abating identified safety hazards according to OSHA standards. • Experience as a presenter at safety seminars and/or conferences. Work Hours
Normal hours are 8am-5pm M-F with schedule adjustment for special projects or deadlines. Some jobs require the consultant to work additional hours very early in the morning, evenings and/or weekends. These irregular work hours occur for many reasons such as required participation at meetings, training, and work events. Travel is a part of the position. Travel can include extended driving and air travel.
