South Dakota State University Department of Agricultural & Biosystems Engineering is offering an exciting career opportunity as an Outreach and Research Assistant. We are looking for a creative and innovative professional to join us. This is a 12 month, full-time, benefit-eligible position. This position is supervised by the Water Management Engineer Extension State Specialist.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide support for the research and outreach activities of the state Water Management Engineer. 
  • Collaborate with research and extension faculty, technical staff and collaborating producers, field specialists, agency personnel, and industry stakeholders for field sampling and applied research related to water management and water quality.
  • Coordinate production of multimedia outreach information, including a podcast, videos, social media, articles, and fact sheets.
  • Conduct applied research activities including water/soil sampling and water/soil analysis. 
  • Work with graduate and undergraduate students to promote research projects and assist in scientific communication of research. 
  • Research project protocol and experimental procedures. 
  • Project implementation. 
  • Ensure research data is accurate, reliable, and uninterrupted.
  • Requires some office work, laboratory work, and field work. 
  • Willingness to work in outdoor environments in all South Dakota weather conditions.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Engineering, Biosystems Engineering, Civil Engineering, Agricultural Science, or a closely related field completed by first day of employment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences and multiple constituents.
  • Knowledge of and experience working with tribal communities in South Dakota.
  • Experience developing and producing audio material such as a podcast.
  • Ability to multitask and balance work from multiple outreach and research projects.
  • Knowledge of environmental and water resources.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Valid driver’s license.
 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience with social media and scientific communication.

The Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Department has 12 faculty members with expertise in water quality and water management, off road equipment, precision agriculture, and bio processing.  The department currently has about 225 undergraduate students majoring in Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, Agricultural Systems Technology, and Precision Agriculture.
