SDSU’s American Indian Student Center is offering an exciting career opportunity as a Native American Recruitment Coordinator. We are looking for a creative and innovative professional to join us in meeting the enrollment and recruitment goals of the Wokini Initiative. Wokini, a Lakota word for “a new beginning” will offer programming and support to those citizens of the nine tribal nations in South Dakota interested in gaining access to educational opportunities at South Dakota State University.This is a new 12 month, full-time position. This position is supervised by the Director of the American Indian Student Center and will work closely with the SDSU Office of Admissions. SDSU is especially interested in candidates that can contribute to and/or coordinate pre-college programming to create an SDSU pipeline and promote success in higher education, as well as understanding the unique experiences of Dakota, Lakota, and Nakota people. RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Establish relationships with leaders in tribal education (K-12 and post-secondary) and tribal communities.
• Partner with SDSU Admissions Office to professionally represent SDSU at college fairs, high school visits, and other off-campus programs.
• Meet with prospective students and families that visit the SDSU campus.
• Successfully manage assigned territories to meet engagement and enrollment goals of the university.
• Establish an effective communication program with students and their parents and partners from an assigned territory including telephone, written communication, email, and social media.
• Determine admission status of freshman students.
• Respond to phone calls for information.
• Tele-counsel with prospective students about admission processes.
• Develop pre-college programs designed to promote success in higher education.
• Participate in Professional Service as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s Degree in American Indian Studies, Psychology, Sociology or a closely related field completed by first day of employment.
• Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated organizational and time management skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work as a contributing team member.
• Self-starter with demonstrated ability to plan, develop, implement, and evaluate recruitment strategies and direct effective programs.
• Valid driver’s license, or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire, and ability to travel extensively with flexibility in work hours.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Previous experience working with Tribal communities and knowledge of SD tribal communities.
• Demonstrated experience with student recruitment specific to underrepresented populations.
• Demonstrated leadership in developing or leading educational programs.

Department Description and Cultural Expectations

UNIVERSITY/COMMUNITY:

SDSU is a land grant university and the state’s largest institution of higher education with an enrollment of approximately 13,000 students. SDSU is located in Brookings, South Dakota, a community of approximately 22,000 persons on the Eastern border of the state. The city has an excellent K-12 educational system. During a campus visit, a tour of the education systems and a visit with the school administrators can be arranged. The city is also accessible to major medical facilities, has an active social and cultural environment, and has numerous lakes and parks within an easy commute. Sioux Falls, a city of approximately 150,000 persons, is a 40 minute drive to the south. Brookings is also located about 200 miles west of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, a metropolitan area with major design and art centers such as International Market Squared Minneapolis Institute of Art, Walker Art Center, and Weisman Art Museum.
