South Dakota State University seeks a visionary leader to serve as Founding Director of the newly integrated School of Communication and Journalism, beginning with the 2018-19 academic year, pending final approval of the South Dakota Board of Regents. Start date approximately July 1, 2018.

The ideal applicant will possess strong leadership skills, conducive to the position’s requirements to serve as a community builder and to provide a dynamic vision for the foundation of the school. The Founding Director will oversee approximately 25 faculty and staff in a school that serves 300 undergraduate and graduate students in Communication Studies, Journalism, Advertising, and Public Relations. Applicants should discuss in their cover letter a proposed vision for how to successfully integrate two existing departments — Communication Studies and Journalism and Mass Communications — into one exemplary school.

The Founding Director will be expected to teach based on his or her expertise and needs within the school.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• A Ph.D. or equivalent in Communication Studies, Mass Communications or closely related discipline and a strong record of teaching and scholarship commensurate with appointment as a tenured faculty member as Professor or Associate Professor.
• Demonstrated experience in administrative work (such as a Department Chair, Director of Undergraduate or Graduate Studies, etc.).
• Demonstrated ability as a vibrant, visionary leader who seeks to build community with both internal and external communities.
• Exemplary oral and written communications abilities as expected from an academic leader in the chosen discipline.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Prior experience with ACEJMC or similar accreditation.
• Prior experience in an integrated school or department.
• Prior experience with budget management, student recruitment and retention, class scheduling, facilitating faculty meetings, developing and enforcing policies and procedures, alumni programming, fund-raising, grant writing, and promoting diversity and inclusion.
