The Graphic Design Program in the School of Design at South Dakota State University invites applications for an Instructor faculty to begin August 2018.

Successful candidates must be proficient in the theories and fundamentals of Graphic Design expertise with a working knowledge of the Adobe CC and emerging advancement in HTML and CSS. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate classes where technical skill, contemporary culture, design theory and cross-disciplinary collaboration are key.

We seek a colleague who has a thorough understanding of the implications of design practice in relationship to broader social, cultural, economic, scientific, and technological forces; has the ability to inspire students and to help them develop skills necessary for the translation of meaningful ideas into innovative and actionable solutions to real world problems; and can assist with the development and support of the program’s relationships with external partnerships, and non-profit institutions. The successful applicant must be authorized to work in the United States. Sponsorship is not available for this position.

POSITION LEVEL:
Instructor, starting August 2018.

BENEFITS & SALARY:
Full Standard benefits. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses in Graphic Design, developing curriculum, mentoring students, supporting accreditation effort, and engaging in student recruitment and retention. Successful candidate will evidence success in teaching and service to the Graphic Design program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
MFA in Graphic Design or equivalent terminal degree by August 14, 2018.
• Evidence teaching Graphic Design at university level as demonstrated through student portfolio.
• Graphic Design expertise in professional practice as demonstrated through portfolio.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Effective interpersonal skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Success teaching all undergraduate levels of Digital Design, Typography, and Graphic Design at the university level as demonstrated through student portfolio and national peer-review.
• Typography, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and/or PHP knowledge.
• Success attracting and recruiting students.
• Demonstrated commitment to working with diverse students, faculty, and staff.
• Evidence of collaborative and cross-disciplinary teaching and ability to teach in another discipline within the School of Design.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE UNIVERSITY:
SDSU is a thriving land-grant university of approximately 13,000 students with a rich tradition of art and design study. SDSU is located in Brookings, a vibrant, creative, and economic hub located north of Sioux Falls and west of Minneapolis.

Graphic Design is nested in SDSU’s School of Design where faculty and programs form a collaborative teaching and research environment that values cross-program and interdisciplinary initiatives. The School grants the BFA in Graphic Design, Studio Art, Architecture, and Interior Design; BLA in Landscape Architecture; and the MArch in Architecture. Students may also earn certificates of study in Animation, Art History, Ceramics, Graphic Design, Painting, Printmaking, and Sculpture. Graphic design students may pursue minors in Advertising, Entrepreneurial Studies, Social Media, Film Studies, Museum Studies, Computer Science, or related study.

The program has initiated NASAD accreditation and is committed to a successful outcome by 2019. Graphic Design majors are served by five full-time design faculty and complimented by art foundation instructors. Graphic Design majors study visual communications theory and practice in digital, print, time-based, on-line, and interactive media. Areas of study include Typography, Branding, Computer Graphics, Publication, Motion Graphics, Web/Interactive, Digital Illustration, Advertising, Visual Communication, and Animation.

ABOUT THE COMMUNITY:
SDSU is located in Brookings, South Dakota, a community of approximately 22,000, near the east central border of South Dakota on Interstate 29. Eastern South Dakota and the region enjoy a rich fabric of smaller cities eager to embrace innovative and smart design practice and culture. Brookings boasts an excellent K-12 education system, accessibility to major medical facilities, along with an active cultural and social environment. The region is dotted with numerous lakes and outdoor recreation within easy driving. Brookings is 50 miles north of Sioux Falls, a city of about 160,000 in fast and increasing development.
