The Department of Teaching, Learning, and Leadership in the College of Education and Human Sciences at SDSU invites candidates for an Instructor position in the area of Elementary/Early Childhood Education. Appointment to begin August 2018. We seek scholars who are committed to core issues in Elementary Education and the improvement of educational systems, particularly in rural schools, to become inclusive learning environments. The department includes programs in Early Childhood Education, Secondary Education, and Career & Technical Education programs in Family and Consumer Sciences and Agricultural Education. The Teacher Education Program at SDSU is NCATE/CAEP accredited.

SDSU is especially interested in candidates that can contribute to and/or coordinate course offerings that address the experiences of underrepresented minorities in organizations. Women, minorities, veterans, and people with disabilities are especially encouraged to apply.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teach undergraduate level courses (both face-to-face and online) in Early Childhood Education- K through grade three; advise students and supervise students in the field; and engage in institutional and professional service. Candidates with experience working with initiatives, projects, and programs that focus on improving the development of inclusive educational opportunities for rural schools and communities are highly preferable.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Earned Master’s degree in Elementary or Early Childhood Education or evidence that the master’s degree will be completed prior to the start of the appointment. Candidates must have demonstrated strong leadership and experience in Elementary/Early Childhood Education, particularly K-grade 3; teacher professional development; use of innovative methods including technology for supervision of pre-service teachers; developing public school, university, and community partnerships; leading change in rural education; and effective written and verbal communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Leadership in school organizations, particularly rural settings and using culturally responsive pedagogy; abilities in evaluating teacher candidates, bridging theory and practice, working collaboratively.

SDSU is a land grant institution and the state’s largest institution of higher education with an enrollment of approximately 12,800 students.

The Department of Teaching, Learning, and Leadership has programs on the SDSU Campus, and houses the Fishback Center for Early Childhood Education which includes one toddler laboratory classroom, two preschool classrooms, and one kindergarten room which is a cooperative venture with the Brookings School District.

SDSU is located in Brookings, South Dakota, a community of approximately 22,100 near the east central border of South Dakota on Interstate 29. The city has an excellent K-12 education system, is accessible to major medical facilities, has an active cultural and social environment, and has numerous lakes and parks within driving distance. It is 50 miles north of Sioux Falls, a city of close to 150,000.
