The Department of Teaching, Learning, and Leadership is seeking an Instructor in Early Childhood Education. This is a 10-month, term faculty position that will include teaching Kindergarten in the SDSU Kindergarten (80%) and other instructional duties to include supervision of teacher candidates and/or teaching a college-level course in Early Childhood Education (20%). The individual in this position serves as a liaison to facilitate and sustain collaboration between SDSU and the Brookings School District.

SDSU is especially interested in candidates that can contribute to and/or coordinate course offerings that address the experiences of underrepresented minorities in organizations. Women, minorities, veterans, and people with disabilities are especially encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Plan and implement appropriate curriculum in the SDSU Kindergarten classroom.
2. Teach college level courses and/or supervise teacher candidates as assigned.
3. Coordinate Kindergarten curricular activities with other teacher education disciplines on campus (i.e., music, PE).
4. Serve as a classroom supervisor for Kindergarten practicum students.
5. Support and maintain NAEYC accreditation for the Kindergarten classroom.
6. Participate in staff meetings of the Brookings School District, the Fishback Center for Early Childhood Education, and SDSU (program area, department, college, and university meetings).
7. Maintain on-going collaborative and positive relationships with Kindergarten families, the Director of the Fishback Center, the SDSU Preschool Coordinator, the Department Head, ECE Faculty, the local school Principal, and Kindergarten teachers in the district.
8. Engage in collaborative teacher research to improve teaching practices.

Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field completed by August 15, 2018. Two or more years experience teaching in Kindergarten through grade 3 settings. Certification to teach Kindergarten in South Dakota by August 15, 2018. Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability and willingness to collaborate with multiple stakeholders in a variety of roles within the Brookings School District and South Dakota State University.

Two or more years of experience teaching Kindergarten. Familiarity with inquiry-based practices, project-based learning, constructivism, and/or Reggio Emilia-inspired practices. Experience with peer coaching, college-level teaching and/or working with teacher candidates in an Early Childhood Education program.

Department Description and Cultural Expectations

SDSU is a land grant institution and the state’s largest institution of higher education with an enrollment of approximately 12,500 students.

The Department of Teaching, Learning, and Leadership has NCATE accredited programs in Early Childhood Education, Secondary Education, Family and Consumer Sciences Education, and Agricultural Education. The department also houses the Fishback Center for Early Childhood Education where there resides one toddler laboratory classroom, two preschool classrooms, and one Kindergarten room, which is a cooperative venture with the Brookings School District.

SDSU is located in Brookings, South Dakota, a community of approximately 22,100 near the east central border of South Dakota on Interstate 29. The city has an excellent K-12 education system, is accessible to major medical facilities, has an active cultural and social environment, and has numerous lakes and parks within driving distance. It is 50 miles north of Sioux Falls, a city of close to 150,000.
