The Aviation Education Program seeks to fill a nine-month Academic Instructor of Aviation Education appointment through an open search for all qualified and interested candidates. The successful candidate for this position will begin their appointment at SDSU in January or August 2018.

TEACHING: The Academic Instructor of Aviation will hold a standard teaching load with assignments through the various levels and types of courses offered in the program. The Academic Instructor will also teach flight-related courses in accordance with program needs and will be expected to perform some Flight Instructor duties authorized by the Federal Aviation Regulations in accordance with approved Training Course Outlines, including providing instruction to students pursing Flight Instructor certification.

SERVICE: The Academic Instructor of Aviation will serve on committees at the college, department, and program levels and will provide service to the profession, the industry, and the region. As a midsized aviation program, the person in this position will work closely with other aviation faculty to develop curriculum and guide the scope of the program. This position allows a qualified candidate to explore many aspects of an accredited collegiate aviation program including engaging in curriculum development, assessment and accreditation efforts, and student recruitment and retention, as well as other duties as required.

Candidates will hold a Master’s degree in Aviation or closely related field. Candidates must also demonstrate effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Additional qualifications include: current FAA Flight Instructor certificate with Airplane Single-Engine rating; two years of flight instruction experience; and a current FAA medical with at least second class privileges. Possess an FAA Flight Instructor Certificate with Instrument-Airplane and Airplane Multi-Engine ratings.

A broad background in the field of education with expertise to teach in a range of areas across the curriculum; a proven record of recent successful teaching and flight instruction; professional experience in the field of aviation; and collegiate flight instruction experience.

South Dakota State University is located in Brookings, a community of 23,773 people. The Department of Consumer Sciences is one of the four departments in the College of Education and Human Sciences, with undergraduate major programs in Aviation Education, Hospitality Management, Apparel Merchandising, Consumer Affairs, Leadership and Management of Nonprofit Organizations (LMNO), and Master’s programs in Financial Planning and Merchandising.
The Aviation program at SDSU is an integral part of the Department of Consumer Sciences in the College of Education and Human Sciences. The ABBI-accredited program consists of 80-90 undergraduate students, and three full-time faculty members and has an intimate faculty-to-student ratio that attracts strong, bright, and engaged students. Over the past few years, the program has built a positive reputation across the region for professionally-focused aviation students.
