Dakota State University (DSU) invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor of Art, effective August 2018. Courses to be taught will be art foundations and survey courses in art history. The occasional upper-division course on the topics of drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, or other specialty may also be required. The majority of courses will be taught on campus with the potential of online offerings. The successful candidate will have an MFA in Art, a demonstrated passion for hands-on instruction, and experience teaching both physical and process media in foundation design courses. Preference will be given to candidates with a minimum of two years postgraduate school teaching experience. A collegial dynamic is important, and the candidate should refer in the cover letter to instances where collegiality contributed to successes as a faculty member. DSU is student centered and committed to contributing to the continued success of the university’s undergraduate programs.

The candidate will be a dynamic and passionate artist who will participate in advancing and growing the program and instruct foundational courses necessary for the Digital Arts and Design (DAD) major at DSU. The successful candidate is expected to provide service to the university and department through committee assignments, curriculum development, student advising, recruiting/retention activities, and to demonstrate a commitment to student learning. The ideal candidate is a mentor who aspires to be involved with students and their process, who wants to push their students creatively and who has demonstrated dedication in helping students reach their potential. The ideal candidate will be a practicing artist who teaches from contemporary experience to help motivate students to create innovative constructs.

The successful applicant will join the College of Arts and Sciences and will report directly to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. The College of Arts and Sciences offers undergraduate degrees in Mathematics and Mathematics Education, Biology and Biology Education, Physical Sciences, Digital Arts and Design, Computer Game Design, English for New Media, English Education and Respiratory Care. The Digital Arts and Design degree program is comprised of four specializations; students may select from: Audio Production, Computer Graphics, Film and Cinematic Arts, or Production Animation. The college also offers multiple minors.

Minimum Qualifications:
MFA in Studio Art, or equivalent
• Practicing Artist
• Desire to teach Art Foundations courses in both traditional/analogue 2D and 3D design
• Experience on department, college and/or university committees
• Two or more years Post-secondary teaching experience in Art History, Art Appreciation and/or Studio courses.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Demonstrated exhibition record /scholarly research
• Experience in Curriculum Development
• Record of successful teaching and advising
• Ability to work collaboratively within the department, college, and university.
• Organizational skills, evidenced by orderly maintenance of student studio space and laboratories and the ability to complete administrative tasks in a timely manner
• Interpersonal skills necessary to help mentor students’ growth both creatively and technically
