Position serves Mission or Pine Ridge schools.

This position is temporary. The anticipated duration is 6 months at less than 20 hours/week.

The Upward Bound (UB) Program at the University of South Dakota is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. The program is designed to generate the academic skills and motivation necessary for success in post-secondary education. Participants are talented high school students who come from low-income backgrounds where neither parent has earned a bachelor’s degree. These students may be at a disadvantage by reason of socio-economic circumstance or inadequate school preparation.

This position is temporary. The anticipated duration is 6 months at less than 20 hours/week.

This position operates in the field and needs a highly motivated individual who will work independently to the highest standards without direct supervision.

Essential job functions include:
-Direct guidance and support to participants (high school students in the Target Schools) via weekly site visits including: mentoring, advising, tutoring and assisting with college access activities including financial aid, college applications and test prep.
-Serving as a liaison between program, participants, parents and schools
-Maintaining confidential records documenting services providing
-Recruiting new participants from the designated Target Schools

Required Qualifications
-Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in education, social work, counseling or related field or comparable work experience.
-Experience teaching, counseling or advising high school students.
-Knowledge of low-income and/or first generation and rural student populations.
-Strong communication skills.
-All applicants should clearly demonstrate: experience with, and commitment to, underrepresented, ethnically diverse and low-income/first-generation youth. All personnel must have a valid driver’s license.
