The SDSU Southeast Research Farm at Beresford, SD seeks to fill an Agronomy Research Assistant position. This is a full-time, benefit eligible, hourly position which will be supervised by the Operations Manager of the research farm. The successful applicant will work with diverse research projects at the research farm. The primary focus will be on cropping systems research at the farm, but would also be engaged with livestock and other farm research and maintenance efforts as directed by the Operations Manager. The research farm at Beresford has 400 acres in crop production which is used for agronomic trials including but not limited to variety trials, fertilizer trials, rotation and tillage studies, and work with annual forages for grazing. The incumbent for this position will be responsible to carry out cropping systems and agronomic research based on protocols provided by SDSU researchers. Therefore the incumbent will have to be self-motivated, disciplined, able to understand and to adhere to research protocols, and be able to work independently on a day to day basis. The person will implement assigned trials including: collecting and storing samples, recording data, and providing for field and plot maintenance and equipment as directed by the Operations Manager at the Southeast Farm. The incumbent will summarize data collected and transmit it to project directors, and may be asked to assist with analysis and interpretation of data and helping to prepare presentations and reports in coordination with the project director and the operations manager of the farm. Secondarily, the incumbent will support livestock research activities and general farm activities as directed by the Operations Manager of the farm. The incumbent will also be expected to productively cooperate in collaborative research efforts with other investigators and agencies as directed by the Operations Manager. Much of the time the position will involve outside work in all kinds of weather conditions including heat, cold, dust, and mud.

• BS in Agronomy or another related field with extensive crop production experience.
• Experience with commercial crop production.
• Experience operating farm equipment.
• Willingness to work outdoors in all weather, to travel as needed to complete assigned tasks, put in overtime when needed, and ability to lift 50 lb. in completion of tasks.
• Willingness to obtain a commercial pesticide applicator license within 3 months of hire.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Effective interpersonal skills.

• Experience with maintenance and repair of farm equipment.
• Experience with agronomic research.
• Demonstrated ability to work with farmers and other clientele groups.
• Experience with GPS and auto-guidance systems.

Work Hours

Normal work hours Monday through Friday most of the time. Depending on the workload at the farm, overtime may be required and sometimes work on the weekend doing chores with livestock or field work will be required.

UNIVERSITY/COMMUNITY: The Southeast Research Farm is located approximately 8 miles from Beresford, SD. The farm has a staff of six employees. In addition to livestock research, the farm also has over 400 acres of crop land which is actively engaged in agronomic research trials.
