The Residence Hall Director is a live-in member of the University Housing team and is responsible for one complex/residence hall, their occupants and facilities. Primary responsibilities include overall residence hall administration including: Training and supervision of Resident Assistant staff, advising complex council, programming oversight, policy enforcement, student conduct work, student development, office hours and on-call responsibilities. Additional responsibilities include coordination of summer camps and conferences, supervision of a collateral assignment, supervision of hall desk worker staff, and possible supervision of a graduate assistant. The RHD reports directly to the Assistant Director of University Housing and is an essential member of the leadership team of University Housing.

QUALIFICATIONS:
A. A Master’s degree required. Preference given to Master’s degree in college student personnel, counseling or related field. Candidate must demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Staff Supervision:
A. Directly supervise a staff of RAs and in some cases, a Graduate Assistant.
B. Select, train, and evaluate Resident Assistant and Desk Worker staff in conjunction with departmental initiatives.
C. Facilitate growth and development of individual staff members and promote team dynamics.

Housing and Hall Operations:
A. Collaborate with custodial and maintenance staff as needed for the operation of the Residence Hall.
B. Facilitate hall openings and closings as necessitated for the start and end of each semester and break periods where applicable.
C. Facilitate room/hall change process, late arrivals, and withdraws within area of responsibility or as directed.
D. Fulfill the responsibilities of professional collateral assignments as directed by University Housing.

Student Development and Outreach:
A. Advise and support RAs in completion of University Housing residential curriculum model.
B. Work with RA staff, tracking and reporting of in-hall programming initiatives.
C. Manage hall budgets pertaining to all hall specific programming activities.
D. Understand and utilize student development theory while assisting student leaders in the areas of personal, academic and leadership growth.
E. Advise the community’s Complex Council.

Safety, Security and Policy Enforcement:
A. Communicate with University Housing, University Police, and other applicable parties regularly regarding safety and security concerns pertaining to residents and facilities.
B. Participate in a Residence Hall Director on-call rotation, being responsible for a department provided cell phone and 24 hour emergency response.
C. Enforce the policies of University Housing, The University of South Dakota, and the South Dakota Board of Regents.
D. Act as a Hearing Officer in cooperation with the office of Student Rights and Responsibilities.

Summer Camps & Conferences:
A. Work with the Director of University Housing, facilitate the University Housing Summer Camps and Conferences Program and summer student housing.
B. Supervise 8-16 summer Resident Assistants.
C. Organize the logistics of check-in and check-out procedures for camps and conferences and summer students.

Division of Student Services:
A. Represent University Housing and Student Services at university-wide committee meetings and divisional staff meetings.
B. Provide excellent communication to the Vice President for Student Services/Dean of Students Office.
