Dakota State University is accepting applications for an Academic Advisor for DSU’s growing online undergraduate student population in The Beacom College of Computer and Cyber Sciences. The successful candidate will be responsible for implementing advising programs and interventions which promote student success and support new student’s transition to the University. Services include advising holistically, including career choices, plans of study, course planning, University policies and procedures, and referral to academic supports. The Academic Advisor will work with current, prospective and returning undergraduate online students to educate and equip them with the necessary tools to carefully create and follow their academic plan of study towards degree completion in a timely manner. The position requires a thorough knowledge of academic and student policies and procedures as the successful candidate will communicate with advisees on a continuing basis regarding all relevant academic policies, procedures, deadlines, submission of forms, academic petitions, transfer course application, drop/add, withdrawal and graduation application as needed. The Academic Advisor will assist the student in creating an academic plan of study and then work with each student to revise and update as necessary. The Academic Advisor will work closely with faculty, staff, and key support offices, including the Office of Online Education, Admissions, and the Registrar’s Office to provide outstanding academic advising. Note: This position can be performed as an on-campus position or remotely.

This is a full-time, 12-month position and requires a Bachelor’s degree in counseling, social sciences, education, student services, human development, communications, or related field. A working knowledge of online advising best practices and prior experience in online academic advising and/or transcript evaluation, as well as experience in enrollment management and data systems (Colleague, Web Advisor) is a plus. The position requires excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills and the ability to connect and work with a diverse online student population, empowering each student to take ownership of their educational journey.

The caseload for this position is approximately 250 to 350 students and may require evening and weekend hours. This position will respond to a vast array and high volume of questions, each requiring knowledge of different resources and will communicate through phone calls, email, Skype, DSU’s course management system, and/or other Internet-based collaboration tools. Prompt and courteous responses to emails and phone calls will be required as will maintaining detailed records of interactions with advisees. The Academic Advisor will be responsible for contacting advisees identified in the Starfish Early Alert system as appropriate.
