This position is limited to current SDSU Extension employees.*

The Youth Safety Extension Field Specialist I provides strong statewide leadership in creating environments and experiences that save lives, prevent injuries, and promote safe and healthy lifestyles among youth while encouraging youth empowerment and leadership. This position will: lead the SDSU Extension team responsible for the development and delivery of 4-H Shooting Sports programs, events, and training in South Dakota. Develop and deliver materials, resources, and training to SDSU Extension staff, volunteers, youth, and partnering organizations; seek and secure funding to support new and/or enhanced programming efforts; and support the land-grant University, SDSU Extension mission and vision, 4-H philosophy, policies and procedures. Occasional overnight stays for statewide SDSU Extension 4-H events are required.

• Master’s Degree from an accredited university or college, academic preparation and demonstrated scholarly mastery in a discipline relevant to Education, Youth Development, Human Sciences, and other related fields.
• Demonstrated effectiveness in oral and written communications.
• Experience with computer and information technologies.
• Demonstrated understanding of the educational process, i.e. developing, managing, and evaluating educational programs with a demonstrated ability to promote creativity and vision in program development.
• Experience in the development and publishing of Extension or other educational materials.
• Valid driver’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
• Willingness and ability to travel.

• Professional experience with youth safety education.
• Professional experience leading aspects of 4-H Shooting Sports program.
• Demonstrated successful experience working with teams.
• Demonstrated fiscal management experience and success in securing funding to support new and existing programs.
• Previous Extension experience with a working knowledge of SDSU Extension policies and organizational structures.

SDSU is a land grant institution and the state’s largest institution of higher education. SDSU Extension has a network of professionals in Specialist, Field Specialist, and 4-H/Youth Program Advisor positions throughout the state in regional Extension centers and multiple county offices. This position will serve the entire state of South Dakota. This position is located on the campus of South Dakota State University, Brookings, SD.
