This position will provide timely 4-H Youth Development research-based information, resources, education, leadership, and support to meet the needs of youth while building relationships to enhance and carry out the mission of SDSU Extension. This full time 4-H Advisor position will serve Lincoln County (Canton, SD) assisting with the management of the local 4-H operational elements identified as priorities by community members and SDSU Extension 4-H Youth Development in accordance with all policies and procedures administered by the state 4-H program. Develop and deliver educational programs in the programming priority areas of leadership, science, health and wellness, and Ag-Vocacy along with other topics identified through informal and formal needs assessments. Establish working relationships and coalitions with other youth-serving groups including schools and out of school programs to ensure maximum opportunities for youth. Provide leadership for volunteer management including identification, orientation, training and recognition for both youth and adults to ensure the capacity to offer programming is maintained and grown over time. Maintain an effective and efficient communications network with the County Commission of Lincoln County, other 4-H Youth Program Advisors, Extension Field Specialists, volunteers, partnering organizations, stakeholders, and the public. Assist in the management of the operating budget for the Lincoln County Extension 4-H office and communicate regularly with the County Commission in relation to the budget and the agreement between SDSU Extension and the county. Position does require some evening and weekend work. Occasional overnight travel to statewide SDSU Extension 4-H events is required. Support the land-grant University, SDSU Extension mission and vision, and 4-H philosophy, policies and procedures. Bachelor’s degree in Child/Youth/Human Development, Education, or other related field if combined with documented relevant youth development or education coursework prior to beginning employment. May 2018 graduates will be considered. Must be able to use a personal computer for word processing, internet-based programs for 4-H management, social media, and e-mail. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must possess a valid driver’s license and personal auto or be able to obtain both within thirty days of beginning employment. Willingness to travel within the state of South Dakota.

Demonstrated experiences in planning, teaching, and evaluating educational programs for youth audiences; demonstrated experiences in event management, budget, and committee coordination; demonstrated experience with youth development programs that include or are similar to the 4-H program; demonstrated ability to lead people including volunteer groups and committees and to work with other youth-serving groups/coalitions to maximize opportunities for youth; the ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences; and a demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of a team.

SDSU is a land grant institution and the state’s largest institution of higher education. SDSU Extension has a network of 4-H professionals that include campus based staff, field specialists, and 4-H Youth Program Advisors located throughout the state on the campus of SDSU, eight Regional Extension Centers, and in multiple county based offices.
