The Department of Animal Science at South Dakota State University is advertising for an Equine Instructor/Lecturer in Animal Science with an emphasis on equine production and management. This is a nine-month, 100% teaching, non-tenure track Faculty position. The successful candidate will contribute to a hands-on program of instruction that supports the mission of Animal Science in equine science. Teaching responsibilities will include the following courses: Horse Production, Introduction to Horse Management, Equine Training 1 and 2, Western and/or English Horsemanship, Equine Health and Diseases, Stable Management, and Equine Internship Coordinator. The potential exists to teach other classes within the Animal Science curriculum. This position collaborates with other faculty for efficient use of the SDSU Horse Unit for teaching and outreach activities. Recruitment, mentoring, and advising of undergraduate students interested in and/or pursuing Equine Studies minors will be expected. The successful candidate will develop a positive relationship with all segments of the SD horse industry. The successful candidate will contribute to scholarly activity in the SDSU equine program.

Earned M.S. or D.V.M. degree completed by appointment date with an emphasis in horse production and management. Successful candidate must be able to interact and communicate effectively (verbally, written and electronically) with colleagues, staff, students, producers and other clientele. Experience in, and in-depth understanding of, the horse industry and an ability to teach equine classes is required. The successful candidate will plan, coordinate, and deliver quality equine classes and other educational activities. Experience with training and strong horsemanship skills are required. Candidate must also have ability to successfully recruit students from both rural and urban populations and secure external funding in support of the SDSU equine program.

Disciplinary training in equine science preferred. Knowledge, skill, and experience in production and management systems of livestock industries.
