The University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine invites applications and nominations for the full-time position of dean of medical student education. Reporting to the dean of the medical school, the dean of medical student education is responsible for leading the implementation, refinement and evaluation of the medical education curriculum, and for ensuring that the school meets accreditation guidelines. The successful candidate will build on an award-winning and effective medical education program and set the course for the future. The dean of medical student education manages a staff of six, including an assistant dean and the director of the fully accredited Parry Center for Clinical Skills and Simulation.

The successful candidate will have leadership experience in medical education and credentials appropriate to appointment at the associate professor or full professor rank. Strong communication skills, a commitment to diversity and inclusion, and the ability to represent the school are essential for the position. Experience in LCME accreditation is strongly preferred. A doctoral degree is required (PhD, EdD, MD, or equivalent degree). The office of medical student education office is housed in Sioux Falls, SD, with some statewide travel required. It is anticipated that a small portion of time will be dedicated to direct teaching of students and/or clinical care.

Key responsibilities include:
• Providing leadership with respect to the medical curriculum and ensuring that the curriculum is appropriately designed and successfully delivered to optimize student outcomes
• Ensuring equivalent educational experiences for students on all campuses and sites
• Ensuring that the curriculum matches the mission of the school including graduating students who are prepared to work in rural areas and with a diverse population of patients
• Promoting student satisfaction with the delivery and design of the curriculum and with the office of medical student education
• Oversight and leadership of the accreditation process, including the school’s continuous quality improvement initiative, in the anticipated eight year period prior to the next accreditation
• Participating in the medical school dean’s leadership committees
• Working collegially with administrators, faculty, course/clerkship directors and key stakeholders
• Preparing reports as required by the school, university, and/ or accrediting agencies
• Supervising and mentoring the assistant deans and staff in the office of medical student education
• Chairing the school’s medical education committee which oversees the development, delivery, and assessment of the curriculum
• Lead annual retreats related to medical education
• Advance the mission related to diversity and inclusion
