South Dakota GEARUP at Black Hills State University (BHSU) is seeking an experienced Nursing Staff employee for the upcoming Summer Honors Program at Black Hills State University located in Spearfish, SD.

The Nursing Staff employee will be responsible for providing critical care for a large group of students ranging from grades 9-12 on the campus of Black Hills State University and off-campus at Placerville Camp, which is located approximately 14 miles west of Rapid City, SD. The position requires that the Nursing Staff be available 24/7 for students and staff from June 10-29, 2018. In addition, a three day professional development training for Summer Honors Staff will be held at BHSU prior to the camp from June 5-7, 2018. Pay for the contract is $2,500 flat fee.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Be available and on-call 24/7 and the ability to be present within 5-7 minutes of being summoned to assist with any emergencies as they arise, as well as any required or scheduled treatment for the health and well-being of students ranging from grades 9-12
  • Responsibilities are both administrative and clinical, including processing student medical forms
  • Dispensing medications and/or designating dispensing duties to the UMA staff at Summer Honors Program
  • Conferring with parents of patients as needed
  • Assessing and treating student illnesses and injuries
  • Recording student health information using appropriate forms for record-keeping
  • Making referrals and acting as a liaison to nearby clinics, physician’s offices, and hospitals
  • Learn and understand ALL emergency procedures associated with the Summer Honors Program and BHSU
  • Maintain accurate program records including incident reports and any logbook documentation
  • Attend the mandatory staff orientation and professional development on campus of BHSU from June 5-7, 2018
  • Live on campus of Placerville Camp for one-week from June 24-29, 2018

Must provide documentation of current RN or LPN licensure with the South Dakota Board of Nursing. Must be able to pass a South Dakota background check. Desire and ability to work with children of all ages. Demonstrated responsibility and dependability. Must be capable of working under pressure in a somewhat fast-paced environment. The ability to deal with distressed people in a tactful manner while providing health and injury assessments and treatment. Ability to work as a member of a team and the ability to accomplish tasks with little direct supervision. The ability to exercise tact, patience and discretion in dealing with patients of varying backgrounds and temperament. The ability to record and recall information concisely and accurately. Possess strong organizational and communication skills.
Have a valid South Dakota driver’s license. Experience as a nurse in recreation, youth camp, youth programs (educational and/or recreational), and/or working directly with children.

  • Must have the ability to physically support patients for short periods of time if needed for safety and treatment.
